I was contacted by Devin Graham (Team SuperTramp) to be part of an idea that I’ve been pitching to them for awhile now - WingWalking. He found a client (Subaru) who thought the idea sounded epic. Together, we all contributed to make it happen. Subaru brought the funding, SuperTramp brought the platform and I brought the stoke!
We met in Ventura, California (Santa Paula Airport) where we arranged a 1943 Stearman airplane to allow us to do the stunt flights. This aircraft was beautiful! There’s only a few of them remaining as it was a limited short run on production. The Stearman airplane was the trainer aircraft for WW2 pilots to train in before they went to war.
The pilot was Mike Mason (Mason Wing Walking) from Sequin, WA. Mike is a skilled pilot who offers these experiences for a living. Any "Joe-manbro" can show up with $850, attend a 4 hour training class, and then take a flight and walk all over his Stearman at 3k agl for 30-45 minutes. His plane is located where he grew up and his family still resides, in Ventura County.
In total, we took about 10 flights. Initially, I brought a couple of parachutes thinking that I’d like to wear one in the interest of safety. After assessing the situation, we found it best not to wear a parachute, knowing that a pre mature deployment could be fatal for everyone involved. I was secured to the aircraft by a 10’ lease of sorts, connected to the fuselage of the plane then back to me wearing a climbing harness. Falling off was very much on my mind as it would have been tuff to get back to the plane. The wild coyote pilots didn’t seem too concerned with me falling off as he had a couple of ideas on how to get me back to the plane. One idea was preforming a zero g maneuver to pitch me back to the plane and the other idea was to land me in the grass adjacent to the runway, both options seemed suspect.
At the end of the gig we were all smiles and things went as planned. I’m learning in life to always say YES when an opportunity presents itself. Sure, things might seem dangerous but so is driving down the street! Say YES to adventure, say YES to good times, and always.... say YES to fun!
