The charming town of Feltre, Italy, rests gently in the heart of the Veneto region, cradled by the majestic Dolomite mountains. Its cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and vibrant piazzas beckon travelers to lose themselves in its timeless allure. But amidst this idyllic setting, there is a force more potent than any ancient legend - the relentless summer heat.
As I arrived in Feltre, the sun welcomed me with a fervent embrace, an embrace that quickly turned suffocating. Coming from Truckee, CA where it had snowed a few weeks earlier the European heat wave hit me like a ton of bricks. The ancient town seemed to shimmer under the sweltering sky, each stone a silent testament to the sun's powerful rays.
My plans for leisurely strolls through medieval alleys and serene visits to local museums began to melt away, much like the gelato in my hand as wandering was mainly relegated to morning adventures.
The Piazza Maggiore, normally bustling with activity, was eerily quiet, save for the occasional flutter of a pigeon seeking shelter in the shade. The grandeur of the Palazzo dei Rettori loomed before me, its historic walls absorbing the sun's fierce energy.
Despite the oppressive heat, Feltre's beauty shone through. The colorful facades of the buildings, adorned with intricate frescoes, told stories of days long past. The fortress-like Castello di Alboino perched atop a hill, daring me to climb its steep path.
I went to Italy to participate in a Paragliding World Cup to get ready for the World Championships in September. We only were able to get three days out of seven of flying but I still had an amazing time flying on steep ridges with the Dolomites as my backdrop. The heat and my flying style proved to be challenging adversaries. My performance in the competition was far from stellar, but I had one of the best trips still enjoying the food, the people, and the landscapes that make Italy sing.
As the day waned, the heat's intensity began to subside, giving way to a golden evening glow. The town transformed, bathed in the soft hues of twilight. The locals emerged from their shaded hideaways, ready to enjoy the cooler hours. Laughter and music filled the air, creating a symphony of joy that echoed through Feltre's ancient streets.
My journey in Feltre was not what I had envisioned, but it was an all-time adventure that I will never forget all the same. The sun, with its fiery temperament, had become an unexpected dance partner, leading me through the town with a whimsical, albeit challenging, rhythm. And as I departed, I couldn't help but smile, knowing that Italy had shared with me a story that was as warm and unforgettable as racing with 120 pilots on the teeth leading to the Dolomites.
