Backyard POW!

The winter of 2022/23 in Utah was record breaking.
We usually average 500” of snow in the mountains around Salt Lake City, and on an average year.... that is plenty of snow! But this year, we smashed the all-time snow-total by receiving just over 900”.... nearly double the norm! It doesn’t take a rocket-scientist to guess we had some pretty stellar powder days. Honestly, it was almost like the entire winter was one big powder day!
Well, all that snow allowed us locals to ski some places that we usually don’t get to go... Like out our front door!
My family and I live at the base of the Wasatch Mountains in a town called Cottonwood Heights. It’s knows as “the city between the canyons”, and the canyons referred to are Big, and Little Cottonwood Canyons, which are home to some of the best ski resorts in Utah. During one of the more productive storms in April, many of us noticed that the foothills on the outskirts of town looked skiable. Usually, new snow melts too quickly after each storm, but this storm provided and we all began thinking the same thing.
Lets go skiing!

Early that snowy morning, I put on my climbing skins before having breakfast with the kids. This is Walter and Gemma. Neither of them are big enough to join me on this kind of adventure yet, but I’m looking forward to the day when we all get to ski together. I’m sure it will be here before I know it.
I wasn’t able to bring the kids, but I was able to bring the dogs. Heidi is a 4-year-old working-line German Shepherd and Bertu is a 3-year-old Shiloh Shepherd. They both love to be outside. Skiing with dogs in Salt Lake is kind of special because most of the ski terrain around Cottonwood Heights is within protected watersheds, where dogs aren’t allowed, so getting to take them skiing where we usually walk them was extra fun.

45 minutes later, I reached the top from where we would ski down. It was nowhere near the top of the mountain, but to go any higher required traveling through thick bushes and large rocks which would make the skiing difficult and counter-productive.
Bertu (on the left) and Heidi (on the right) hung out while I put my climbing skins back in my pack and got ready to ski down.

Salt Lake City is full of outdoor enthusiasts, so it was no surprise to look up and see another skier working their way down the mountain. It was a great chance to see what the turns would be like....
......and they looked great!

The dogs figured out quickly that following the ski tracks was the easiest way down. So, they ran behind me... covered in snow and I stopped every few hundred feet to let them catch up. Heidi was always in the lead (as usual), with her lazier brother slowly catching up from behind.

The last third-of-the-way down, I kept skiing as it seemed like the dogs would know to keep following to soon be back at the house. Well, one of the dogs figured that out and was right behind me the whole way. The other dog.... well I guess he decided to stop when I wasn’t looking and I almost had to hike back up and get him. But luckily, he was only a few minutes behind and I didn’t have to make another lap.

By noon, the entire hill was covered in ski tracks.
Looks like everyone had the same idea! It’s cool to see how so many people are excited to play outside during winter in Salt Lake City. It’s fun to look up the mountain in the summer, when it’s 100 degrees out, and think that we got to ski on that very same backyard hill.
Sometimes, KAVU adventures involve traveling to far-away places.... But other times,
They are in your very own backyard!
