Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to make a return trip to Yunnan, China to fly wingsuits with friends. Dashinbao is now a bit of an epicenter for wingsuit BASE jumping, and a special spot for me, being that I was the first person to jump at the spot we now refer to as "BASE World"... back in 2014.
Exit elevations (the spots we jump from) in this area of China are around 3300 meters, with landing areas at 2000, 900, and all the way down to 300 meters above sea level! That makes these jumps some of the biggest drive-up event locations in the world; truly unique!
After the long travel from the U.S., it's always cool to see old friends, albeit a little strange to see your face on wall-sized posters... Ha ha ha... But, it definitely adds to the surreal nature of what we were there to do.
We were invited to participate in a BASE jumping demo event in Dashinbao for a television show and although Pat Walker and I have been going for many years, it's always cool to be back for more KAVU days! The other athletes and friends who came from around the world were Liz Freeman, Espen Fadnes, and Amber Forte. We each got to do 5 jumps over the 3 days of the event, all from the Wings for Love Platform, which is one of the largest platforms in China to be constructed for BASE jumping.
So much of these trips is also just immersing in the culture and the landscape. The flying is epic, but the people, place and way of life makes it easy to stay present on trips like this one.
The flying was pretty good too;-)
Over the last 10 years, many exit points have been opened (mostly by Pat Walker), and numerous platforms have been constructed in the general area. Also, many of the previous shuttle times, often 6+ hours on bumpy and dangerous roads, have been improved with tunnel access from modern freeways.
It's created an interesting balance between adapting structures within nature to make access to flying unique to this part of the world.
I already can't wait to get back for more KAVU Adventures!!
