Nestled in the verdant landscapes of northern Spain, Bilbao isn't just any city—it's a vibrant tapestry of art, culture, and innovation with a massive helping of Basque goodness. If cities were people, Bilbao would be that eccentric uncle who shows up at family reunions with a suitcase full of fascinating stories and a knack for making everyone laugh...aka Barry Barr.
Let's start with Bilbao's transformation. Picture this: the 1980s, a city choked by industrial decline and pollution. Fast forward to today, and Bilbao has done a complete 180, morphing into a gleaming beacon of urban renewal. It's like watching a caterpillar turn into a butterfly, only with more pintxos.
Speaking of pintxos, these delightful little bar snacks are practically a religion in Bilbao. Imagine tapas, but with a flair for the dramatic. Each pintxo is a miniature work of art, skewered with a toothpick and bursting with flavor. From succulent seafood to mouthwatering meats, pintxos are the culinary equivalent of a warm hug from your grandma.
Our tale begins in the heart of Basque Country, where the spirited people of northern Spain have perfected the art of convivial dining. The word "pintxo" (or "pincho") derives from the Spanish verb "pinchar," meaning to pierce. It is a fitting name, for these little gastronomic treasures are often skewered with a toothpick, a humble yet noble device that holds together the symphony of ingredients perched atop a slice of crusty bread.
One cannot truly appreciate pintxos without understanding the culture from which they spring. In Basque Country, eating is a communal affair, a joyous gathering of friends and family who share not just food, but laughter, stories, and a profound sense of togetherness. Pintxos bars are lively, bustling places where patrons flit from one establishment to another, sampling the offerings laid out before them like children in a candy store. It is a veritable dance of flavors, a choreography of taste that unfolds with each new bite. One of the secrets to finding a great offering is a busy establishment. The locals know where to go, and if it is very hard to find a place to stand, you are in the right spot. Steer clear of pintxo bars that have ample seating and very fancy looking eats.
Each pintxo is a masterpiece, a testament to the creativity and skill of the chefs who craft them. They are a canvas upon which the finest ingredients are artfully arranged, a harmonious blend of textures and tastes that delight the senses. From the simplest combinations of anchovy and olive to the most elaborate constructions of foie gras and caramelized apple, pintxos showcase the ingenuity and passion that define Basque cuisine.
The best part? Pintxos hopping. It's like a pub crawl, but with way better food. Wander from bar to bar, sampling the best each establishment has to offer, and wash it all down with a glass of txakoli, the local sparkling wine.

Bilbao is a city where the past and the future coexist harmoniously. Stroll through the Casco Viejo, the city's old quarter, and you'll find yourself stepping back in time. Narrow cobblestone streets, charming plazas, and centuries-old churches tell the tale of Bilbao's rich history. Yet, just a stone's throw away, you'll encounter the sleek modernity of buildings like the Iberdrola Tower and the Zubizuri Bridge. It's as if Bilbao decided that being stuck in one era was far too boring, so it chose to embrace all of them simultaneously.
No mention of Bilbao would be complete without tipping our hats to Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum. This architectural marvel, looks like a spaceship landed on top of a prime piece of riverfront property and unwittingly blended in. With its shimmering titanium curves reflecting the Nervión River, it's one of the city’s global icons.
Inside, the Guggenheim is an art lover’s paradise, with works that range from the whimsically abstract to the deeply profound in its scope and use of immense space to showcase gargantuan works and smaller installations that shift with time. It's a place where you can lose yourself for hours, pondering the meaning of life—or at least the meaning of that confusing sculpture in the corner, which many think they too could, in fact, create. Modern art can be a challenge to appreciate at times.
Then there's Bilbao La Vieja, the city's answer to Williamsburg. Once a gritty industrial area, it's now the epicenter of Bilbao's hipster scene. Think street art, quirky boutiques, and enough artisanal coffee shops to keep you caffeinated for days. It's the kind of place where you can buy a vintage vinyl record, get a tattoo (Free KAVU Tattoo for Anyone Willing?), and sip on a craft beer—all before lunch.
Bilbao knows how to throw a party. The city’s calendar is dotted with festivals celebrating everything from local traditions to avant-garde arts. The Aste Nagusia, or Great Week, is the year's highlight. For nine days in August, the city transforms into a carnival of music, dance, and sheer joy. It's like Mardi Gras, but with more Basque flair and fewer beads. Music lovers, rejoice! Bilbao is home to one of Europe’s hottest music festivals, BBK Live. Set against the stunning backdrop of Mount Cobetas, this three-day extravaganza attracts top international acts and thousands of fans. It's a place where you can rock out to your favorite bands while soaking in breathtaking views of the city below.
Last but certainly not least, it's the people of Bilbao who truly make the city shine. The Bilbaínos are known for their warmth, humor, and resilient spirit. They have a knack for making visitors feel at home, whether through a shared laugh at a local bar or a friendly chat at the market.
In Bilbao, you'll find a community that embraces life with open arms and an open heart. It's a city where tradition and modernity dance together, creating a symphony of experiences that will leave you enchanted and eager to return. You will also have eaten the best food and the most delicious wine day in and day out then anywhere else I have been in my life. I left completed satiated both physically and mentally from the experience.
So, pack your bags, book your ticket, and GO to Bilbao—Spain’s northern jewel that sparkles with charm, joi di vibe, and historical greatness that transcends modern times.
