We found ourselves back in it, and it was rather comfortable.
After running out of money on the road, Tracy and I had to put our time into making some before traveling again. There was no way around it. Back to the 9 to 5 we went.
The contrast from the highs of being on the road, constantly exploring sunk into the lows of mondaine life. But we found that rhythm, the rhythm so many do. Wake up Monday. Go to work. Dream about your weekend adventure. Have you weekend adventure and repeat.
It really only took a couple of weeks for that rhythm to come back and after all the unpredictable time on the road, it started to feel pretty good.
We got to hang out with old friends, got back to our local spots. The mountain bike trails we know, the hike we can do with our eyes closed, the swimming hole that we like to think is still secrete and of course our favorite stool at the bar. It was good times making good memories with friends we hadn't seen all year.
Our contracts came to an end. Our bank accounts were full (or full enough) to hit the road again and start the US leg of Searching For Sero. But there was something holding us back. Something different. It wasn’t the same excitement we had the first time we quit our jobs to live the #vanlife.
After a few departure setbacks due to some mechanical issues with the Westy and a couple other unpredictable mishaps, we were back at it. Vermont was our first state to explore.
....lined my stomach as I pulled out of our old driveway. A safe spot that I know. There was something that just felt unsure.
The first night back in the van wasn’t comfortable. It was hot. It rained. The van wasn’t parked at level. I was nervous about the spot. All these things just added up. Uncomfortable.
The next day led us to Burke Mountain Vermont. We biked. We peddled our asses off. That first downhill section brought the smile back to my face. The excitement of what being uncomfortable truly means. A real KAVU day!
That night, we cooked up some burritos in the van beside the camp fire, swam in a cold ass creek and met some new friends. It made me thing back to those months of work and why I did them.
It was to be able to live in the van. To be able to explore, adventure, meet rad people and be somewhere new all the time. And yeah, it’s sometimes a little uncomfortable. But really, who wants to live comfortably all the time anyways?
