As the temperatures break records across the west, and a 8000+ acre fire is burning in the Lasal Mountains where we usually escape the heat of the desert, all the creatures in Moab have to work a little harder to survive the scorching summer.
The answer? Get up and get after it early! There is no sleeping in, and the best thing is to get to bed when it’s not even dark yet.
Once you adapt to 4:30 starts, summer is a pretty unique time to survive and thrive in the desert. Pre-dawn is when the wildlife is most active
The hot-air balloon crews are up in the air, paragliders are flying around, you can get in a good trail run as long as you stay in the shade and get done before 6am, and it’s the very best time to BASE jump, with cooler temperatures and no wind.
All the other critters are out too:
Pronghorns, Bighorn sheep, deer, Blue Herons and beavers.
When it’s 10 in the morning, and you’ve already gone running, gone BASE jumping, and climbed in the yard, and the sun is blazing down over the desert, the Colorado River is the place to be, so just about every day ends with a river float.
Summer is a pretty intense time to be in Moab, especially this year! The days are long and the temperatures are basically insane!......
..... but with a little bit of adaptability there is still plenty of KAVU fun to be had.
