About an hour and a half drive north of Barcelona, you'll find the beach town of Empuriabrava.
With a beckoning coastline as far as the eye can see, the vast blue ocean, green farm fields, and mountains with snow on their tops still hanging on from winter.... this is a gorgeous place to skydive!
Springtime in Spain was even more beautiful than I'd imagined.
Skydive Empuriabrava is a world-class DropZone, with various aircraft and a large, grassy landing area just minutes from the ocean. I can't imagine a more perfect setting to make a lot of wings suit skydives.
I was invited to Spain by a group of students who wanted to improve their wingsuit skills... and this was the obvious place to do it.
Wake up, KAVU day, Repeat!
The town was threaded by canals connecting all corners by boat. It was pretty spectacular to see from above. There were beautiful clouds to fly around, and a nice, daily breeze to land.... All, with a perfect little café for lunch!
Ideal, for sure!
Depending on the wind direction, some of the jumps would take us out over the ocean and back. Others took our group of flyers over farm fields, and towards the snow-capped mountains. Either direction was beautiful and both kept us fired up for more airtime.
The students all progressed on their control while exiting the plane, flying close to other suits, transitioning to their back, parachute deployment and navigation.
At the same time we were training, there was a large group of Skydiver working on "big way" formations (without wing suits). The group was using three planes, all at the same time, and building large formations of up to 60 people! We watched from the ground as you could see people exiting from all three aircraft, coming together to build a large shape, then dispersing in time to pull their parachutes. It's always cool to see different disciplines being practiced in the sky!
By the end of the trip, I admit to being ready to get back to the mountains in Utah, but I will definitely return to this Skydiving Mecca!
Special thanks to Casey Pruett for the amazing photographs!
