When friends and I embarked on a 6 week adventure to Nepal, we decided to base in the beautiful lake town of Pokhara, a short flight from the capital of Kathmandu. Our goal was to get as much air time under our paragliders as possible while exploring the majestic mountain landscape from above.
We also wanted to do a bunch of exploratory "hike and fly" missions, so we planned to spend several days hiking through the Himalaya with our tents and sleeping bags on our backs, as well as our paragliders, with the intention to ascend the big peaks that overlook Pokhara with hopes of flying from their summits.
We had an amazing time exploring the countryside and flying around these incredible and inspiring mountains. Being there with my girlfriend Helen, and my good friend and flying/adventure partner, Walker Mackey accentuated how special it felt to be in those ancient and beautiful mountains.
One of the highlights was flying with all of our bivy gear in our paragliding harnesses.... and actually heading out with the idea of flying to a top-landing spot, somewhere high in the mountains. From there, we could whip out our tents, camp for the night, and then launch again in the morning.
This was the first time either of us had done a true "vol-biv" or, "fly-camp" trip.
It was incredibly exciting to launch without knowing where or when we would land, but knowing we had all the right equipment to survive for a few nights in the back country.
Walker, preparing to step into the air and join those "locals" among the clouds....
It's hard to convey how a trip like this has changed me. The vast expanse of the mountains and the sky also seem to describe the endless expanse of possibilities when the world is looked at with a wide-open heart and perspective. Klear Above, Visibility Unlimited is what it's all about.
To us, these are KAVU days never to forget!
