Gypsy Roadtrip

Brittany is my gypsy friend—she returns home to Salt Lake from time to time to cook food and tend her garden, but most of her time is spent traveling in her Sprinter or around the world to chef for events and climb. I love cooking too, so when we get together there’s always eating involved.

Sometimes she comes down to Moab to do some climbing, or else we try to find a time when we will both be in striking distance of a good spot. I knew I wanted to head down to Arizona to do some skydiving, so I checked in with Brittany to see if she wanted to meet up in Sedona on the way: turned out, she was coming back from an event in Bishop and was already planning to stop at her mom’s house in Flagstaff exactly when I was thinking to stop through.

It’s nice when things work out like that!

So to make this all even better, I got to have dinner with Brittany, her boyfriend Nate, AND her mom Janet who took me through a box full of all of Brittany’s old pictures, including baby pictures and school dances!

Brittany hated it! :D :D :D :D

Since we had two Sprinter vans, one dog who needed to play ball a lot, and unlimited delicious food we could cook, we decided we needed to go somewhere with great camping as well as climbing.

Sedona had a big mountain bike event going on and was destined to be crowded, so we headed back north a bit into a beautiful canyon and pine forest off the beaten path.

As a group of 3, it can take longer to get everyone climbing, but since all the routes in the canyon would require rappelling to the bottom and then climbing back out, we decided to use our gear skills and cut out the middlemen.

We set up rope solo systems from above. This allowed us to just have a huge climbing free for all, where we could climb next to each other, shoot pictures and video of each other, come down to heckle or visit each other, or hang out on the top in the sun with Cajun, and no one ever had to belay. So we all got to climb as much as we could and work up plenty of appetites for dinner and breakfast.

Brittany and I always like to circle the vans and create an outdoor kitchen between them with all of our tables and chairs and stoves and pots and pans.

Somehow our climbing meetups are just always too short….

I can’t wait for the next time the stars and the vans align for us to join road trips again.

KAVU is an aviation acronym for “clear above visibility unlimited,” when there isn’t a cloud in the sky and you can see to the horizon. That limitless feeling is our guiding philosophy. It means treating every day like it’s special, and then getting out and doing whatever brings on the perma-grin. That’s KAVU.
