When the temperatures start to creep above 100 degrees F, Moab starts to feel a lot like a desert…but it’s a desert.... sandwiched between the Colorado River and the Lasal Mountains, so if you play your cards right, you can find some pretty nice ways to survive the summer!
Once we got some paddleboards, I realized how much fun can be had on the river, and there are endless ways to play with them. It helps a lot to have a canine captain....
....as long as everyone has their own PFD!
You can strap two boards together and make a PaddleBarge, complete with camp chairs for full relaxation-float mode!
This is obviously a great way to have morning coffee, or drinks and dinner :D
It’s also a lot of fun to round up a few friends and head down the river, stopping at little beaches here and there to play some stick.
Gotta keep the captain happy!
The playboat/paddleboard team is also an excellent combination, and you can paddle up eddies on the side of the river and go down little rapids together.
I didn’t previously know this, but there’s a little kayak community in Moab, and when the levels are just right, some great holes form and they come out to play. Since Ian loves playboating, I can grab a free shuttle from him when the holes are "in", and Cajun and I can go down the river just about every day!
In the evenings, I love to see the golden light on dark water, reflecting the cliffs along the winding river, and great blue herons fishing along the sandbars. We love passing deer wading in for a drink, and sometimes beavers cruising around the Colorado's banks.
The river has its own pace and its own creatures, it’s a part of the pulse of the desert......
.....part of it's heartbeat.
