The Himalaya have a way of drawing you in like a trance; one that will suck you in deeper than any addiction. It is a whole new level of outdoor playground. The mountains are bigger, the valleys deeper, and the culture richer than any other place on earth. Nepal has captured our hearts in a new way that has transformed the way we think. For adventures, I look at Nepal as Lewis and Clark probably looked at the Wild West during their first American West expedition. With endless terrain and never ceasing discovery, Nepal is an experience of a lifetime.
Cherise and I first experienced this country in a very unique fashion. I was photographing an expedition on the North Face of Annapurna 1 in the Spring of 2015. Little did we know we were about to experience a life changing shock that would rattle our cages beyond imagination. Half way up the worlds 10th highest mountain, and deadliest, we were struck by a 7.8 earthquake that devastated the countries remote villages. This was the moment when Nepal became our second home.
Spending nearly half of our time living in Nepal over the past 2 years, we have found the art of paragliding as our place to re-charge, to reconnect with the mountains, and more importantly reconnect with each other.
To travel over the Himalaya powered by nothing but hot air and rising adventure is an experience that leaves you standing breathless, in awe, and dreaming of exploring more terrain. You become addicted to the views, your peers are Himalayan Vultures; prehistoric dinosaurs mapping out your next move as they sniff out the thermals. You experience the classic treks in a way never seen before. We become sky trekkers, exploring the worlds wildest terrain, in the un-solicited art of free flight, hidden from spectators, scores, or guidelines. In this moment we are truly free!
Sharing this unreal experience with someone else gives you a whole new traveling experience. Surfing the skies together, we are able to see a different perspective from above. While in Nepal, I was able to guide Cherise through her very first cross country flight. It was both terrifying and yet so rewarding. Every day we are looking to the sky hoping that conditions are good so we can grab our magic backpacks and set sail on our next adventure together.
....but the place where we begin our journey. The mess of nylon and cord is now a vehicle for discovery, new friendships, and endless adventure; often carrying far beyond the duration of the flight as we try and make our way back home.
