After working a busy summer season in Alaska, I knew that when I returned home, the best way to enjoy my time off would be a road trip across the west coast of the US.
So, I called my girlfriend Laura back home to asked if she would pick me up in Portland after getting off the ship, so we could drive up the coast, hit the northern tip of Washington, then head east to the mountains before cruising our way back south to Colorado.
We mapped it all out and had the perfect plan drafted.... with a good mix of coastal adventures followed by epic days in the Rockies and Sawtooths.
It was our first time introducing our dog, Judy to the beach and she had the time of her life running around in the surf, chasing gulls, playing in the sand, and enjoying the sunshine.
I can’t even remember the last time I had that much fun, I felt like a kid again running around with the pup.
It was the epitome of KAVU days and I loved every minute of it.
After a fun filled week on the coast, we changed course to the interior and headed for the North Cascades and the Enchantments in Washington.
It was our first time exploring these mountain ranges, so we picked a few recommended trails and covered as much ground as we possibly could in the short time we had. Most days, we were on our feet for 20 miles or more, and the incredible scenery blew us away!
By the end of the day, we would return to the van exhausted, but with Huge smiles on our faces.
Finally we devoted the last week of our road trip to the Sawtooth mountains in Idaho...... one of our favorite places to explore.
We went for big trail runs, did some overnight backpacking trips, hung out with friends and family, and enjoyed the beautiful sunshine on the lake shore beaches.
It’s sad to see the summer days getting shorter, but we’re heading into Fall with happy hearts and big grins on our faces after an action packed summer full of adventures on the road!
KAVU Days, indeed!
