Turns out..... the answer is no but, there's a lot of rad stuff in Romania non-the-less.
Over the last ten years of traveling to Europe, I've never made it east of Slovenia. Not a surprising fact considering the grandeur of the Alps and Norwegian fjords.
At the tail end of this summer's voyage, my partner Julia and I decided to venture to Romania. I’ve heard stories of epic mountains, awesome BASE jumping, and vampires. We ended up finding all of the above…....
......except the vampires.
I planned a few days at the local drop zone near Bucharest, TNT Brothers Skydiving, for some wing suit coaching. Skydiving in a new country is a great way for me to see a new perspective on the sport at the ground level.
After 2 short days at the drop zone, we spent some time sight seeing on our way to the Becegi mountains. We made a quick stop at Dracula's castle in Bran, a quick stop in Ploiesti, and a short trip to Brasov.
Upon arrival in Busteni, we decided against the long wait times on the cable car and opted for a taxi ride up the back side of the mountain.
The views from the top were as spectacular as the ride down the front. We jumped from the “classic” exit...... a massive overhanging section with a large "rock drop".… and then again, from a shorter exit, near the cross that seems to be a fixture on so many summits around the world.
The flight from the cross was pretty special to me, considering not many people have jumped it and my knowledge of the jump was pretty limited going into it.
It was a 100% exploration flight. The fact that I was able to get all the way back to gondola was an excellent surprise.
Turns out, Romania provided a perfect end to a full season of 'sending' in the alps. I'd definitely and highly recommend it to anyone interested in a change from the normal pace of western Europe.
....... We may or may not have got a few extra curricular jumps here and there...but those are best talked about in person over beers :)
