Ever since I got my Private Pilot's License, Neil Amonson and I have been talking about finding time to do some fun jumping missions with his planes. A few weeks back, we finally found a day to get the crew together. Neil had the idea of doing a fun "KAVU lifestyle shoot" on the salt flats, and to combine it with some jumping. So, Neil, Jesse Hall and I got together along with Rocko, our photographer, to find somewhere cool to do the shoot.
Neil and I met up early so we could do some more pilot training in his Cessna182. The goal was to get me comfortable in the airplane, so I could fly and Neil could also make some jumps. After getting confident at the airport, we went out to the salt flats to check out a spot that might be good to land the plane, and use as our base to do some jumps. Neil landed the plane and we got out to assess the conditions and LZ. Neil decided he liked it, so we pulled all our gear out and he left me there while he went back to the airport to pick up Jesse and Rocko.
Once those guys got back.... we came up with a game plan to get some fun shots of the new KAVU collection.
We got some fun lifestyle shots and me and Jesse geared up to do a couple jumps.
Jumping out there away from civilization was so cool. It really felt like we were on a different planet!
After Jesse and I did a few jumps, I went back up with Neil in the plane to get comfortable with how to fly for jumpers, and how to land on the sand. What a trip it was to be landing somewhere other than an airport! Neil is such a rock star, and his teaching style is awesome. I've learned so much flying with him.... and his vibe is low stress.
After a handful of laps, we were both feeling good about it and Neil grabbed his rig. Before I knew it I was dropping jumpers for the first time in one of the most unique places in the world to skydive.
This was such a rewarding experience for me. I've only ever been the jumper, and it felt really cool to contribute to a fun adventure like this. This will be a day I remember for a long time :)
I'm beyond grateful for the KAVU crew and the ways it's supported me so far. I'm really excited for the future possibilities with this team.
Thanks for the KAVU day!!
