I am faced with an immediate decision. I can decline this handsome and fascinating man's first date offer of a tandem paraglider flight at sunset, suggesting that maybe instead we ought to grab a coffee and get to know each other......
....... or simply follow his instructions and run when he says "run"... straight off the side of a mountain.
At this moment, I know approximately three things about Logan: He flies helicopters, paragliders, and he lives on an avocado orchard. That is all the information I need. The Oxford dictionary defines trust as a "firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something."
I don't know much, but I know the man can fly things, and with that inkling of certainty, I realize the only way to trust someone is to give it to them. I choose to trust him and to trust that life is about experience, adventure, love and sharing as much of this crazy and amazing world with good people.
Our trust has grown and opened worlds I would have never before imagined. And because of that, I now know a few other things:
1. Logan supports my individual journey and my passions, whether it's racing at Olympic Trials in rowing or racing 2500 miles across the Pacific Ocean...... he's there for me.
2. He helps me grow, easing me outside my comfort zone, teaching me to ride a motorcycle, pushing me into waves as I stand up on a surfboard for the first time, and showing me how to leap off a cliff, joining birds in powerful thermals 17,000ft in the air.
3. He follows his own passions, tackling waves and wrestling boulders, exploring mountains and deserts by air and by foot, soaking in hot springs, and running dozens of miles at a time.
4. We can rely on our "base camp".
At the end of the day, there's a warm bed, chocolate chip cookies, and a good book waiting for us. No matter where we are or how far we push ourselves, our "base camp" is together.
It is the support, belief, and love in ourselves and each other that makes our base camp special. It gives us the courage to dive headfirst into our own unknowns.
