Back in November, I got invited to participate in a skydiving event/competition to help promote tourism in the state of Nayarit, Mexico. The event was coordinated by a team in Mexico through Miles Daisher from the Red Bull Skydiving Team. 15 athletes and pro-level fun-havers were invited from all around the world for the event, called "Nayarit Desde El Cielo"
We jumped in 3 very unique areas of the state....... In the first location, we did demo jumps over Islas Marías. Islas Marías is located about 100km off the coast of Nayarit, Mexico and is often referred to as the "Alcatraz of Mexico". It was home to a Federal Prison until it was decommissioned in 2019. They recently opened the island up for tourism, and flew us there in the jump planes to do some demonstration jumps, and to spend the night on the island. The water was crystal clear and had this amazing turquoise color! It was so awesome to be able to jump and fly our wingsuits over this beautiful island with awesome people and good friends. I even got to fly/jump out of an ultralight, which was my first time doing that.....
It honestly didn't feel like "real-life" out there.
The next location we jumped was at the San Blas Pier. This pier is pretty iconic and very well known in Mexico. There's even a song about it!
Oh and guess what, there's even a KAVU item named after it! Do you know which one? ;)
This location was the first day of the friendly swooping competition. We jumped out of a heli, with the goal to swoop the water in front of the pier and land on a floating target in the middle of the water.
Luckily I was able to stick it on the orange floating target... and stayed dry!
Finally, the last location was Mexcaltitán.
This is a small ancient/historic island in the middle of marsh land in Nayarit. It's only around 1300 ft wide, and it is often referred to as the "Birthplace of Mexico". It can only be accessed by a 15 minute boat ride, or by helicopter. For our event, the organizers put us on some small boats and took us to the island.
From there, a heli came to pick us up to drop us over the small island.
Obviously, we knew we should start our KAVU day off with a demo jump in our wingsuits.... I mean, what else would you do?
After our initial bird's eye view, we did our "competition jump", trying to hit a target in the designated landing area.
In the end, I was able to get 3rd place for the competition on this fine, KAVU day.... and got a cool looking jaguar covered in beads (this is a common art form found in Mexico).
They place each bead individually on wax to create the coolest looking patterns!
Perfect trophy!!
Overall this was an incredible opportunity and awesome trip to be invited to. The state of Nayarit, Mexico is beautiful, and super fun..... even if you aren't jumping. There's so much to see and do and it's very affordable. The food is awesome, the culture is fun, and it was a nice break from the cold winter weather in Utah.
