I've been in the sport of BASE jumping for quite some time, and it’s not a common occurrence that I get to jump in a completely new area. So, this morning was specifically exciting and special.
Thanks to the hard work of some close friends, we have a beautiful, new Wing suit jump near our home in Utah. The valley where the new exit is located is nice and wide, with a beautiful meadow to land in and great camping by a small creek...... in many ways...... pretty much perfect.
My friend Brendan and I started the hike in the early hours of the morning darkness to give ourselves the best weather conditions for the jump. It always seems like we're doing something exciting when we start the day off with a headlamp on!
On the way up to the exit point, there were traces and signs of mountain lions having been in the area, which added to the excitement, for sure. But, a gorgeous sunrise kept our minds in the right space and the morning light helped a lot to make us feel a little safer.
When we reach the top, the weather was perfect. So, we took our backpacks off, had a snack, drank some water, and started to get a feel for the terrain below. The cliff itself is not especially tall but with the new, larger Wing suits..... we are able to get flying relatively quickly and enjoy all of the altitude that the mountain has to offer all the way down to the meadow.
After a thorough gear check and weather reassessment, we decided that all felt right and we were ready to jump. The sun was shining and there was warm, lifting air on the mountain side.... perfect conditions for a smooth flight.
Brendan jumped first and did an excellent job. Hearing his excitement over the radio after landing made me feel even better about the jump!
Carefully stepping close to the edge, double checking my footing, I took one last deep breath to focus, closed the visor on my helmet and gave a large push off into the air high above the valley. The suit pressurized with air as I extended my arms and legs, becoming the shape of the perfect human glider. The mountain side is very steep which is ideal for a safer flight, and diving to keep my speed high also increases the fun! I glided 3,000 feet down to the meadow, slowed my suit down and like so many times before, deployed my parachute.
Looking back up to the top of the mountain, it somehow looks different now that we have seen it from different perspectives.
Big hugs and smiles..... then pack everything up and off to the next adventure! --
