Along with my good friend Hayden Peters and my wife Kara, I hopped a flight from Portland heading South to look for uncrowded surf and new culture. After landing in Managua, we drove through the night to arrive on the North coast of beautiful Nicaragua. Much needed sleep led to waking up psyched about the days to come and the scene outside.
Hayden is one of the best film makers today. He and his partner, Andy Maser, have been creating soulful films that inspire and/or educate many. Hayden is, for sure one of the very best human beings I know and to call him a friend is an honor. He also happens to be a ripping surfer and true water man. I have a lot to learn from this Jedi
Well…..I guess we should go get busy livin’ and have a surf, eh?
The waves were clean and the water was warm……
After a little bit of a warm up, we woke the next morning at 4:15am to meet the boat for a lift out to a clean and consistent left point break.

trading waves with friends all morning, my face hurt from laughing so much
and trying to find some shade. The best part about surfing is, it’s so hard that every wave is an opportunity to continue learning.
I can only react to what is in front of me. There is no way to predict what a wave will do which makes surfing special because, it’s essence is to live in the present. It’s a perfect way to pay attention to the all important “here and now”
…..we passed this kid and his brother. They were riding their ponies on the beach and the pure joy coming from their smiles was not only contagious but, showed that happiness is wherever you chose to find it.
So fun to sit with the boys and look through the images from the morning and take the opportunity to relive moments and laugh yet again at the unbelievable amount of fun that was had!
I love visiting new cities. The colors, smells, sounds and culture always mesmerizes me. I love to find the humility and appreciation for the opportunity to experience such raw life.
Walking up a coastal volcano led us up a trail to a crater filled with a freshwater lake. Bugs and birds, the sounds of the forest was a cool contrast to the coast.
Our trip was amazing and we were all filled with exactly what we came looking for. Get out, find your bliss and live each and every day to the fullest! That’s KAVU!!
