This past spring, my Dad started bouncing around ideas on where the family could come together to see each other and to have some fun. One idea came up that sparked everyone’s interest.... The Redwood Forest!
My sister currently lives in Colorado and I live in Utah. Temperatures in both states were around 100 degrees Fahrenheit in July, so a little time on the foggy coast, walking through a magical forest in the cooler temps sounded amazing!
We booked flights and the next thing we knew..... we were in Medford, Oregon driving toward the mighty Pacific Ocean. We'd booked a cool little house in Brookings, just north of the California border and once there, time seemed to slow down. The combination of ocean and ancient forest felt like a deep breath of fresh air.
Each morning started with thick, mysterious fog, which was beautiful for walks on the beach and even more amazing in the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. It had been years since I was hiking through those massive trees and I forgot how amazing it really is!
The size of the trees is hard to comprehend, even after spending hours there!
The energy in these old groves is powerful. In the afternoons the sun would cause the fog to slowly burn off, revealing a beautiful day to get on the river. On two of the days we were able to float amazing stretches of river and see the massive trees from the water as well.
And each evening, we would hit the coast for another epic sunset with waves crashing to add to the show. The trip was amazing and left us wanting more. In fact, we already have started planning for next summer.
Balance is important. Most of my life is dedicated toward flying wing suits and getting wild in the mountains, but this was an incredibly nice KAVU break from the "extreme lifestyle" and a great way to get some family time in!
