Julia and I were blessed with Rio Thiers Morgan on March 20, 2022. Both Julia and I lived very wanderlust lifestyles for a long time and never really thought of having kids. When we made the decision to try to start our family, we realized that it would change a lot.
We both work in Skydiving and BASE jumping, so we had to make a decision to either give up a lot of what we love, or find a way to make it work. We are learning every day, and have come up with some tips for people that live active lifestyles and decide to have a family.
Don’t ever feel bad for asking for help - We are both incredibly lucky to have very good friends and family all over the world. Having a third hand around just to give you a break every once in a while is a massive stress relief.
Collapsible Strollers are game changing - We got one that fits into an overhead bin and airlines don’t charge you for it. Sometimes, Rio just needs to sleep, and having a place for him to crash anywhere we are is pretty amazing.
Hit us up for recommendations!
Plan a day in between big travels to decompress - If you are doing anything more than a 6 hour plane ride, try to add an overnight stop to de stress and let your kid get out of travel mode, even if its just for 12 hours. We have had pretty awesome results with this!
If you get the chance to sleep…DO IT! - go’s without saying that the first few months of parenting involve a lot of sleepless nights. Add jet lag and a "baby out of sleep schedule", it can get gnarly real fast. If you see the opportunity to take a quick nap, we highly suggest you do it…anywhere you are.
Never wait till the last moment to get to the airport - Both Julia and I were pretty used to the “1 hour before flight and run to gate” ritual pre-Rio.
Now, we add an extra hour to that.... and try to never to get to the airport less than 2 hours before our flight. Same goes for layovers. We just say "no" to anything less than an hour.
Expect to always have more baggage than you thought humanly possible -
BASE rigs, Sky rig’s, wing suits, tracking suits, climbing gear, clothes… all this stuff takes up a lot of baggage space. Throw a baby into that mix and you easily end up with five to six checked bags on the regular. We stick to one airline and got status that allows us to do this without breaking the bank.
Diapers around the world are not created equal - we have sampled the world's selection of diapers, and can say without a doubt that Switzerland's are the best (go figure). If you know you are about to go to a place with crappy diapers, stock up on some quality ones and throw them into your already bulging checked bags.
We have had some downright awesome moments on the road with our kid, and some really painful experiences as well. Hopefully some of these tips help you out if you find yourself in the same situations as us.
Becoming a parent doesn’t have to be a death sentence to your adventure life. Sacrifices will happen for sure.... but with a little stress comes the great reward of raising your child with an open mind and a whole gang of great photos in cool places.
KAVU days ahead for the whole Fam!!
See ya out there!
