Quite possibly one of the most exciting things you can do as a skier and a B.A.S.E jumper is combining the two activities into one aw—inspiring moment in time.... when you feel like a superhero!
Ski-B.A.S.E!
A basic explanation for this wild stunt: find a cliff that's several-hundred feet tall, click into your skis and put your parachute on... ski off that cliff and open your parachute to land smoothly back on the snow with your skis.
At first glance, ski B.A.S.E might seem like a safer way to B.A.S.E jump because we’re able to get further away from the cliffs than we normally could by just jumping. But when you dive deeper into what makes a safe jump, and what makes our parachutes open facing forward, you start to realize that a ski B.A.S.E jump is extremely complex, and has a lot more risk involved.
In the moments before the jump... while you’re skiing, there’s a lot of speed and energy moving towards the edge of the cliff. You can’t make any mistakes during this time, or they could be your last.
It's crucial to ski smoothly off the end of the jump, then to maintain control of your skis in the wind so they don’t flip you over. During a standard B.A.S.E jump involving stepping off a cliff or a bridge, we focus on keeping our hips and shoulders facing forward... symmetrically, and even in this scenario, it's a challenging skill set that is important to work on continuously. The addition of speed and the surface area of the skis in the wind makes this a lot more challenging.
It’s extremely rewarding when all of the mandatory skill-sets come together in a perfect jump!
A few times a year, we get the crew together for some Ski base fun!
This season was no different.... With an all-time crew and great snow conditions, things T'd up nicely for an epic time! We built a beautiful jump with a smooth takeoff, and had amazing weather for this year's send fest, and KAVU Days were had by all!!!
