Part 1 - Road trip!

This past July, there was a heat wave that, I'm sure we all remember! Ian and I had plans to travel to Switzerland for the entire month of July, but as our trip approached, we realized:

a - We have this awesome van and...

b - We have always wanted to visit the Pacific Northwest and...

c - We were already having separation anxiety from our dog creature, Cajun!

So, we decided to push the Swiss trip back to August, hop in the Sprinter with the dog and head north!! We had a couple goals: to visit Jeff, Kara and Nya Shapiro in Missoula, and to chekc out Mount Baring for flying and Index for it's well known and well deserved reputation for good rock climbing. I also really wanted to go to Idaho's Elephants Perch to climb since I have great memories from past trips there..... and the Fins (another rock climbing area), and....whatever else.....It's a KAVU Road Trip!!!!

We stopped at the Perrine bridge on our way and did one jump, but the heat pushed up north, pretty quickly, to the Elephants Perch

redfish lake

We crossed the lake and started the hike in towards the routes , but the bridge that allows access was washed out because of the unseasonably high temps, causing the creek to overflow. We did our best to "orienteer", but finally got turned back.

Idaho Limestone

This gave us time to check out the Fins (fun, vertical, HOT)!! Wasn't long before we decided we had to keep going north to find some better temps.

Montana!

We had a fun visit with the Shapiros, and Jeff got me all excited to get a paraglider:) But....it was STILL hot!

Cascades

So, we kept going north and finally made it to Index and Mt Baring, where we had always wanted to check out the climbing and wingsuit jumps.

Mount Baring...

... is an awesome wingsuit jump! It's an adventure and so beautiful to not only fly but, just to get to the perch used as the exit. We were lucky enough to have the chance to jump it once together and once with friends.

granite goodness!

It was still a little warmer than ideal, but we had an amazing time at Index--climbing and jumping in the river every day. Cajun was obviously psyched;-)

...and willing to share her beers with us after our long, hot days...

Good creature, Cajun!

At this point we wanted to stay in the PNW forever.... and also go to Canada, but we were suddenly out of time.

Next year, two months at least!!

Stay tuned for Part 2

KAVU is an aviation acronym for “clear above visibility unlimited,” when there isn’t a cloud in the sky and you can see to the horizon. That limitless feeling is our guiding philosophy. It means treating every day like it’s special, and then getting out and doing whatever brings on the perma-grin. That’s KAVU.
