Every year, in early spring, my wife and I make our pilgrimage to the desert of Southern Utah. It‘s a time to dust off our winter weariness and soak up vitamin D from a warm sandstone perch.
There‘s no agenda for the trip. We might ride bikes, we might not. We might explore a new drainage, we might not. Our only expectation is to hit the reset button, mentally and physically.
We love the desert. It‘s beauty is stark and simple. It can be simultaneously hostile and uninviting, and yet, beckon like a brand new playground at school. Run around, jump, throw rocks, drink a cheap beer and watch the sunset.
This year is no different. We woke early and went to bed at sundown. We cooked beans and stared at the fire. We watched ravens surf thermals high above red cliffs and stayed twice as long as we had planned. And we could have stayed longer…..
Luckily the desert doesn‘t change fast enough to lose it’s magic. So when we go back, we‘ll get this same feeling all over again. That….that’s KAVU!
