KAVU revolves around unbridled fun and finding and pursuing what you love. In this new series we will highlight the epic-ness of our regional food differences while highlighting, and hopefully inspiring ideas for you to have KAVU meals.
Since the days of cave people, sitting around a fire and sharing a meal has been a crucial part of every day. For our family, during shelter in place, it became a time we could gather, create, laugh, and generally tune out the news of the day. Trying to fill holes in our lives from missed friends, connections, and travel that included a variety of cuisines, I started researching alternative food-gathering options. Like many, I bought a freezer for the garage and started looking at both more sustainable consumption patterns by buying larger quantities of beef from sustainable farming businesses, as well as utilizing local “specialty” stores to create the dishes I have come to know and love from nearly 30 years of travel. I quickly found a real love of the hunt for the perfect ingredient, or cherished family recipe, and celebrated a big food “score” as I would a deep powder day or a great flight. Beaming as I drove home from a new market thinking of the smiles I would create on my wife’s face with a new kofte recipe or with fresh taco offerings from the coolest Carniceria ever that’s just 20 minutes from my house in Reno, Nevada.
Historically, my KAVU days have been about traveling to great places, flying paragliders, and enjoying the novelties of life. It’s a great gig. This year though, like for all of you, life changed. But this doesn’t mean we can’t touch tie into the sounds, smells, and tastes we experienced on the wing.
Cooking with KAVU is a grassroots movement primarily centered on creating epic shared experiences. We cook to eat, not eat to cook. Messy, delicious, easy, comforting, family recipes and regional delights will hold our attention. Everything from oysters to smash burgers, from Nona’s meatball recipes to easy at-home red curry. You’ll get to meet numerous KAVU staff, athletes, dealers, and fans as we share a virtual table and hopefully inspire you to have KAVU days around your table with your loved ones.
We’re glad you made it, pull up a chair, grab a drink and let’s eat!
