Southeast Alaska just finished its second-rainiest summer on record. Of course, right? The one summer with no tourists and yet, we get the most consecutive days of rain ever recorded!
But all that means is that when the sun shows up........
....... we take advantage!
It seemed like everyone, human or otherwise, in Juneau was taking advantage of the sunshine!
Setting up camp on the sea cliffs, I learned quickly that we picked the perfect spot since I could already hear the whales and sea lions in the water.
The charismatic megafauna did decide to make an appearance, and my favorite part of our trip was sitting in the hammock watching whales. No matter if it’s my first whale or my 4,000th, I’m equally excited.
And..... you’re not a true Alaskan until you treat its 46°F (7°C) water like it’s the Caribbean. Paddleboards were launched (dog included) and, I spent the better part of an hour blowing up a giant flamingo pool float.
Hot-pink pool floats.... apparently.... tend to steal the show, and it took less and less convincing to get us into the water.
I’ve missed my Alaskan sunsets for most of this summer, so I was especially excited to watch the sun get low behind the mountains.
And, I saw my first star in months!
This is what I love about Alaska. Not just camping with humpback whales, floating on the pristine (yet cold) water, and watching the sun set on summer. But the wonderful people I get to appreciate it all with.
Cheers, summer. I hope the rainforest enjoyed all the rain.
Winter and darker days are definitely coming.....
........ but there are more, and different adventures on the horizon!
Here's to more KAVU Days!!
