Ian and I got engaged last January on top of Castleton Tower, and this November we got married at our small cabin near Indian Creek with the help of our family and friends.
Life has been busier than ever all year, so the idea of serious wedding planning seemed a little overwhelming.
But we figured we’d focus on the important things: when, where and being with loved ones... and the rest would just fall into place.
As it turns out, it’s surprisingly involved organizing things like cake. Ha ha ha!
And a significant element of wedding planning apparently comes down to tablecloths. Who knew? Luckily we didn’t, until sometime in October and it all ended up working out!
Our good friends Ben and Dacia Black own a helicopter tour company in Moab and when we told them where we wanted to have the wedding, (about a 40 minute drive from Moab) they immediately offered to fly us there in the R66, the fanciest helicopter they have right now.
Cajun has flown with Ben before, and since she was supposed to be the ring bearer, she rode with us.
My best friend Lisa Hathaway officiated our ceremony, we made a champagne toast and then everyone headed back to Moab to another one of our favorite local spots, the Helipad (named because it’s our friend Helena’s gathering space, you can’t land a helicopter there).
There, we had vegan Sri Lankan curry, cake (!), and music from several of the wedding guests, including Ian and his dad, Lisa (who always has to do everything), and Chris Kalous.
A week later, we threw another wedding party for all the friends who couldn’t make it to the first one.
Ian chose the theme: Black Tie to Super Fly, as we figured this might be our one and only opportunity to see our friends dressed up in gowns and tuxes (which was a truly amazing experience), but as the night went on, the costumes got more colorful, sparkly and furry.
The knot is tied, and we did not use a bowline <3
