Having moved to the Oregon Coast a year ago, it had been a while since we'd seen some of our close friends from Montana.
Toward the beginning of the summer, Jacob Glass called Kara and I with the idea of a road trip to Oregon for the 4th of July. He was planning to stop in Hood River to hang with his good friend and fellow paraglider pilot, John Boone before cruising over the the coast line in search of Puffins. Jacob is an avid "birder" and lover of nature (which is one more thing we have in common) and he was determined to get some shots of this super unique bird.
While in Hood River, a little mountain biking and berry picking with John on the way to check out the kite boarding scene seemed like a no-brainer.....
Leaving the gorge, Jacob dropped down toward the Pacific and ventured out to some known local hang outs for Tufted Puffins and was psyched to see and photograph these colorful pelagic seabirds. They breed in large colonies on coastal cliffs or offshore islands, nesting in crevices among rocks or in burrows in the soil.
Then, he continued down the coast to our home town. With the wind just right, I took him to one of our more picturesque launch sites to fly our paragliders together. It seemed like a proper welcome.
But, fortunately and unfortunately.... local peregrine falcons were brooding chicks on the cliffs close to launch. So, the Park Service had the launch sites marked off and closed for a little longer until the young birds were fully fledged. Still.... it was a beautiful place to get a view of the coast and a good start to his visit here.
So instead, we made a quick trip to the Rogue Brewery for some fuel.....
.....and then hooked up with my good friend, Dylan Kosten for a ride on some of the local flow trails. Riding in these coastal forests is pretty magical and it was super fun to spin a couple of laps with two good homies.
After changing into some more comfy KAVU digs at home, Kara wanted to take the dogs for a cruise in the woods which, was a good excuse to show Jacob one of our favorite spots to hike. It's 3 mins from the house and when sun filters through the massive trees to light up the almost florescent green of the understory, the forest seems to be constantly revealing things we've not seen before. I think the only ones that love it more than us is our dogs.... and maybe Sasquatch.
After our hike, it seemed like the best thing to do would be to head to the hanger and get Jacob in the back of the KAVU Cub. Taking a rip up the coast was something I was really looking forward to doing while he was here and we were stoked to have such perfect weather. The Cub rarely disappoints.....
So, off we went.....
Seeing Newport from the air, passing the lighthouse on the way north, and tucking into some of the hidden bays.... it was cool to show Jacob some favorite surf spots and a few of the paragliding launches close to home. We scanned the water for whales and saw a bunch of sea lions basking on rocks....
There's not much I like better than getting to fly with good friends.
Overall, it was a pretty epic visit and series of memorable KAVU days. His last day of the trip was the 4th and it seemed proper to head down to the beach to make a fire before the fireworks started.
Sitting by that fire, I looked around and smiled..... feeling pretty lucky to get to share time with a bunch of rad humans. Kara and I are super grateful that someone as positive as Jacob would come all that way to visit us. He brings huge smiles.... pretty much wherever he goes.... and it seems like whenever we get to hang out with him, KAVU memories are made.
More to come! Thanks Jacob! Come back soon!!...
