My name is Flavius Sterciuc and I have been a part of the KAVU family for 6 years amazing years.
My good friend Tyler Lee, who leads the KAVU team, asked me to share a bit about what we've been doing in Kenya and.... how KAVU has helped us to do our best to make a difference.... locally and worldwide!
Two and a half years ago, I had the opportunity to join the amazing team at Vital Solutions.
Vital Solutions is a medical nonprofit that provides free medical care in desolate areas of Kenya, Africa. We have built 3 hospitals in Kenya and have also started 2 schools called The Elevation Champions Academy. Our schools have a total of 160 kids that we cloth, educate, feed two meals a day, and provide free medical care for. These kids are all from remote villages or, are orphans from the street.
From the beginning of my time with this nonprofit, KAVU has always been with me and showed support for what we're trying to accomplish. They have and continue to donate all types of apparel, which has blessed thousands of people in Kenya.
Here are some of their stories......
This October we were able to take a team from Seattle to spend a few days at each of our schools!
The first day, we started by handing out items to each and every one of the 160 students in each of our two schools!
The joy on the kids faces when they got a shirt, hat or even a sticker was amazing! There's so much that's "contagious" about seeing joy in the smiles of kids!
They love to pose and always want to see the photos. Most of them have never even had or seen one photograph of themselves.
We even got to give the teachers some swag! These teachers work so hard, and in such rough conditions, and their salary’s average about $50 a month. They are often forgotten in the process but we, as an organization, are always grateful when KAVU donates adult apparel as well!
On this trip, I met a man who was the village elder. He sadly went blind some years ago. He had heard that a group of Americans were at the village school and he asked someone to guide him to the school.
Keep in mind that October is the rainy season in Kenya..... and there are no paved roads so, in a village, what you walk on is mud and rocks. It is very unsafe, even for someone who is not sight impaired.
When he arrived, he was brought to me and through a translator he asked for a hat to help him through the rainy season. As he was talking, I noticed his sunglasses which hid his eyes. He told me he had this single pair since he became blind. They were kept together with tape and were in rough shape. I told him that I had a special gift for him.....a brand new pair of KAVU sunglasses. He felt them with his hands and he said he felt no scratches. He was overcome with emotion and said he will remember this day for the rest of his life. Such a small gift can literally change someone’s life. It gave him a new confidence and he left with the biggest smile.
THANK YOU KAVU!
We also have a student who is battling Leukemia. On this day, she felt like every other kid at the school..... full of joy and excited about her new clothes and stickers. She was able to forget her battle for a day.
Thank you KAVU!
Our kids were so happy! This day in October was their Christmas! This day made their year.
In the last year we have started a sponsorship program for these students. For $30 a month you can cloth, educate, feed 2 meals a day, and provide free health care for a child.
