Walter Goes Bush-Flying

This past winter, I got to share one of my favorite activities with one of my favorite people!

I was able to take Walter, my 18 month old son on his first ever backcountry flying adventure. Since for now, he is too small to sit in the normal seat, step one was putting his car seat in the plane.

While I was prepping for our flight, Walter received a 5-star dining experience by our very own KAVU ambassador Jacob Glass. As a new father, I definitely don’t know all of the parenting tricks, but I do know that when it’s time for Walter to eat, if I’ve got his high chair and some food....

.....he is one happy boy.

Does anyone else think those little feet are the cutest thing in the world?

This adventure was extra special because not only did I get to take my son, but long time friend and KAVU stud, Jacob was our partner in crime as well.

Jacob has a contagious smile and we always look forward to hosting him whenever he is visiting Salt Lake City.

After we took off from the little airport in Mountain Green, it’s a short flight out of Weber Canyon before flying over the Great Salt Lake. The mountains turn into salt flats mixed with water and most days, it's very beautiful.

15 minutes of flying time later, we landed on Freemont Island, a special spot of land on the lake with two official landing areas on it. The runways are generally flat and the smooth dirt makes an excellent place to land an airplane.

I’m so proud of this little man for being brave and trusting me to take care of him. While his energy is hard to contain in the house, he is his best self when out in the world. He is a curious little boy who loves new sights and sounds.

My favorite part of taking Walter flying is that when we land away from a normal airport, he can get out and wander anywhere he wants. There is no where he isn’t allowed to go...

No real flying adventure is complete without some buddies to share it with. In this case, fellow pilots Mike and Matt also flew to the island in an airplane called a Bearhawk, an excellent "taildragger" that can seat up to 4 adults and is designed for off-airport flying.

Also, we weren’t the only ones on the island this day.

We shared the airspace with one of the most majestic local birds, a golden eagle. It’s tremendously enjoyable to look up and watch them glide silently along the wind with no motor and seemingly no cares in the world.

Leave it to Jacob to notice the little details while the rest of us are staring up in the sky dreaming of flying. Spring is an exciting time in Utah, with the weather swinging wildly back and forth between winter and summer conditions. It’s also a time when many of the plants that hibernated through the cold winter months come back to life and start sharing their colors with us once again.

But, before long it was time to head back to civilization. I strapped Walter back in his car seat and we took off into KAVU skies.

Not many things make a pilot happier then looking around their plane and seeing friends and family enjoying a flying adventure. I wonder what Walter is thinking in this moment in time? His stoic expression seems content;-)

Back safe and sound on solid ground, Jacob and I put the airplane away while Walter entertained himself. When dressed appropriately, it seems that this little man never gets tired of playing outside.

I guess he gets that from his Dad.

On our way home, Walter had taken a much earned nap in his car seat. The same seat that an hour before was flying through the air in a 1959 Cessna 182B. I wonder if he is going to remember any part of these first flights? I can’t wait until he is older and I can tell him stories of how good of a co-pilot he was as a toddler. I hope as he grows up, we both still make time to fly together, and maybe one day I can even teach him how to fly.

If he doesn’t want to learn, that’s completely OK as well. I’m just thankful that for now....

....he is my co-pilot and number one adventure buddy.

KAVU is an aviation acronym for “clear above visibility unlimited,” when there isn’t a cloud in the sky and you can see to the horizon. That limitless feeling is our guiding philosophy. It means treating every day like it’s special, and then getting out and doing whatever brings on the perma-grin. That’s KAVU.
