Hangar Progress - Part 2

In the first story I shared about building our own hangar for the KAVU Cub (the bush plane that I still can't believe I get to fly), we'd just managed to get the truss rolled and the beginnings of a roof. It was so cool to finally see the building begin to take form. Coming out of the winter months and having the postws set in concrete was a crazy process to get through with the amount of rain we commonly have here on the Oregon coast. But, once we started to get the steel exterior installed, and finally have the space "in the dry", it felt like the finish line was in site.

One of the last components was the door. Anyone who has had any experience with hangars for small airplanes knows that the door is nearly always a massive pain. Depending on type, they are typically heavy, bind over time and in general are a beast to open. I ended up going with a light weight aluminum door from FoldTite.
It's a "french door" style design that opens easily and is also very secure. I chose poly carbonate for the panels (clear on the top run and "smoked" on the bottom two runs) to allow natural light into the hangar during the day. After getting them on, I couldn't have been more psyched on both the function and the finish.

Of course, in between working on the hangar, there was lots to do.
Part of living a KAVU lifestyle is to always remember to prioritize hanging with family and friends, pets and nature. I feel like; if I do the things I love to do, the work and finished projects always turn out better. So..... runs with the Heeler dog, hunting with the falcon (Cirrus)......

Back to Work!
After getting the electric service brought into the hangar and the lights hooked up, I put a coat of epoxy pain on the asphalt and a few guide strips for pulling the Cub back inside (to make sure my wings have equal clearance from the doors).
I must admit, seeing the plane tucked in from the weather and having a comfortable place for maintenance and servicing the engine made me pretty stoked and happy. She takes care of me in the air and I feel like it's super important to always take care of her so we both stay safe.

And, it's easy to remember why the effort is worth it every time I get to fly the coast and the mountains surrounding our home in Oregon. Whether looking for river banks to land on or hump back whales in transit up the coast line, flying is such a magic experience and super fun to share.

If you're a pilot, you get it.
I'll be finishing up a few more KAVU Cub episodes soon so, even if you're not..... if you're interested, check em out and don't hesitate to reach out. Flying has changed my life over the last 3 decades and anytime I can help someone have that opportunity, even if it's just answering questions, I'm in 100%.
Blue Skies and KAVU days!!!
